- What's FTP?
The most widely-used way of downloading and uploading (getting and putting) files across
an Internet connection. The File Transfer Protocol is a standardized way to connect
computers so that files can be shared between them easily. There is a set of commands in
FTP for making and changing directories, transferring, copying, moving, and deleting
files. Formerly, all FTP connections were text based, but graphical applications are now
available that make FTP commands as easy as dragging and dropping.

- What is Anonymous FTP?
Many computer systems throughout the Internet offer files through anonymous FTP. This
means that you can access a machine without having to have an account on that machine
(i.e. you don't have to be an official user of the system). These anonymous FTP servers
contain software, documents of various sorts, files for configuring networks, graphic
images, song lyrics and all sorts of other information. Archives for electronic mailing
lists are often stored on and are available through anonymous FTP. An enormous amount of
information is stored on these machines and is ready for anyone who's seeking it. (Note
that all this is subject to change, it is a privilege and the person responsible for the
machine can shut it down at any time without you being able to do anything about it.)
- How do I FTP using a login and password, rather than

- How do I view a text file without downloading it first?

- What types of files are there on the 'Net?
More than can you can imagine, but here is a short list of file
types.
