"Many homes and businesses no longer require local telephone service for general voice communication, due to the abundance of cellular phones and advances in voice services like Voice over IP (VOIP)." |
Dedicated Line DSL |
A dedicated DSL line (Also called Dry Loop or "Naked DSL", Dedicated ADSL or SDSL) is a dedicated pair of copper wires that runs from the "Telco" Central Office or aggregation point to your location. A dedicated DSL line is essentially a telephone line, but is utilized exclusively for DSL data transmissions and does not have a dial tone phone service (Dry Loop) from the Phone company. |

Shared Line ADSL |
A Shared DSL line (usually ADSL) does just that... shares the same line your phone service is installed on. Shared Line DSL requires you have local phone service with the incumbent phone company (ie. AT&T). The user typically installs a DSL filter on each phone jack that has a telephone. This filters out the high frequencies from the phone, so that the phone only sends or receives the lower frequencies (the human voice). The DSL modem and the normal telephone equipment can be used simultaneously on the line without interference from each other. |
